 Carbon atom adjacent to the functional group is alpha, next beta, third gama, then delta, and so on. For example

CH3-CH2CH2COOH is Butyric acid, CH3CH2CHClCOOH IS ALPHA CHLORO, CH3CHClCH2COOH is beta chloro
