 CH3-CH2-CHOH + SOCl2 -----> CH3CH2CHCl+SO2+HCl

thionyl chloride in this reaction replaces hydrxy group with chlorine to form alkyl halide...and the byproduct obtained can easily be separated as both of them are gases

CH3-CH3-CHOH + SOCl2 -----> CH3CH2CHCl+SO2+HCl
