A monoatomic ideal gas initially at 170C is suddenly compressedto one eighth of its original volume. The temperature aftercompression is(a) 170C (b) 1360 C (c) 8870C..explain

170C=170+273=443K

now, as the gas is compressed suddenly, it means that the compression is done such that there is no exchange of heat with the surroundings...

therefore, the gas undergoes an adiabatic process.

for monoatomic gas adiabatic exponent gamma=5/3=g

using the equation for adiabatic process TVg-1=constant

if T1,V1 be initial temp. and volume and T2,V2 be final temp.. and volume.

u haveT1V1g-1=T2V2g-1

V2=V1/8

therefore

T2=T18g-1=T1(8 )2/3=4T1=4(443)=    1772K

=1499 C????

Finally I reveal myself...

Tantri is right.

But I thk thers jst an error in ur question.I mean 2 say if v consider 17oC instead of 170C and follow the similar method TVg-1 =Constant we get 887oC instead of 8870C in ur option.

17oC=290k

T1V1g-1=T2V2g-1

we get substituting,T2=1160K=887oC
