The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), and the Kasturba Hospital, is run by the Kasturba Health Society. The Society was established in 1964 The MGIMS was earlier affiliated to the Nagpur University since its inception in 1969 till 1997. From 1998 the MGIMS has been affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nasik.
The MGIMS admits 65 medical students on the basis of a pre-medical entrance test (in 2006, close to 10,000 medical aspirants took the test).

Examination centers:
A competitive entrance examination is conducted by the Institute at Delhi, Nagpur, Hyderabad and Mumbai centers.
